Merafong Hip Hop lovers at biggest Hip Hop festival in Africa

Everyone was inspired by the various acts.

Hip Hop lovers from Merafong attended the ‘’Back to the City’’ music festival on Saturday October 12 at Newtown in Johannesburg.

Several local artists were sponsored by the festival  with free tickets to be part of the festival and to experience the event which has taken place
annually for the past 18 years. The festival delivered on the promise to offer the best of South African Hip Hop artists and there were 100 artists on stage and the most popular acts were Emtee, Nasty C, Blackkie, Priddy Ugly, Maglera Doe Boy, Nadia Nakai, Big Zulu, Zakwe and surprise act Cassper Nyovest as well as legendary artists who celebrated 20 years of Hip Hop albums such as Mr Selwyn, Zubz, Ammunition, Menzi (H2O), Golden Shovel (Cashless Society).

There was one international act known as Benny the Butcher who delivered an exclusive hour of pure rap performance from the Hard Core Hip
Hop fans and he was joined by one of SA’s most prolific lyrist known as Stogie T. There were three stages on the day and 40 DJs who entertained the audience throughout the beautiful day.

There were also various food and clothing stalls, gaming stations, basketball competitions as well as rides and different stakeholders who were present throughout the Mary Fits Gerald Square to ensure entertainment is there for everyone. There was a moment to commemorate the late South African Hip Hop Idol known as HHP and there was tribute from Motswako rapper known as Lection.

There was also a performance by legendary kwaito artist known as Thebe who celebrated his legendary career with his old school classics. Safety
was a priority through the presence of the Saps, Eyethu Security, Cortac, Platinum 360 Security, Musimeki Security, Bhekezela Patrol Community and Newtown car guards ensuring that there were no cars stolen, pick pocketing, phone snatching, broken windows, muggings, stabbing and thuggery.

The Back To The City team brought their A game on as the event was very successful and there were fireworks to indicate that the event was a celebration of 40 years of SA Hip Hop which is meant to bring different people together to enjoy their freedom in peace and the crowd dispersed peacefully around 02:00am.

Back To The City Festival of 2024 managed to gather 18 000 vibrant people in one space and would like send a big thank you to their amazing attendees, partners, artists, and everyone behind the scenes. ‘’We’re back to 18,000 strong in the crowd because of you, let’s keep making history’’
mentioned the founder Mr. Osmic Menoe. The highlights of the event was also broadcasted on national TV broadcaster SABC1.
