Merafong Youth Month documentary film screenings
A series of films will be screened in Merafong in June.
EXT Lab Media and Awoke In Words Movement from the Merafong area will host the documentary screenings on 11, 16 and 18 June 2022.
June is a pivotal and commemorative month for all South Africans; it stands as a reminder of the country’s collective struggle against oppression.
In an ongoing bid to use artistic expression as an activism tool, these screenings use film and arts for social engagement on issues concerning the youth and local communities. With a selection of documentaries by seminal South African filmmakers, the organisers promise offerings that would otherwise not be seen by local communities, even though they express themes and concerns at the heart of local communal struggles.
Besides the films, Lesedi Marufa from Awoke In Words, and Bleed To Lead will also perform. The latter is a local theatre group that devises sketches and monologues that have become an essential component of protest theatre.
EarRead Project, a Khutsong-based literary forum, will present their revolutionary work on literary appreciation and representations of local stories, having established a formidable book club around Merafong. They will present their vision and aims for the literary camaraderie being cultivated in Merafong with the invaluable support of Mr Gibson Sakong and MoAC City Talent Vision. These collectively-established initiatives are an intervention for artists while also incorporating other social structures with similar social objectives to work in synergy towards the fruition of many social dreams.
The event will be a gathering for self-reflection, including the screening of “Tales From The Fisch” by Mzwakhe Dlamini, “Mutant” by Labogang Rasethoba, “A New Country” by Sifiso Khanyile, “Dying For Gold” by Catherine Meyburgh and “A Place Called Shall Never” by Paul Zisiwe.
