Tragic accident claims the lives of Carletonville pensioners at Fochville

The accident happened while they were on their way from visiting family.

Two pensioners from Carletonville died in an accident in Fochville over the past weekend.

According to informed sources, the residents, Ockie Venter and his wife, Martie, were driving back to Carletonville after visiting family in Parys on Sunday afternoon. As they were driving on the R500, nearing the entrance into Losberg Avenue in Fochville, a bus turned into the road, right in front of them.

Ockie was killed instantly while paramedics tried to save Martie’s life. Although an ER24 helicopter was called to transport her to Fountain Private Hospital, she passed away before arriving there.

Paramedics from Gauteng EMS also attended the scene. According to sources, the bus driver was arrested at the scene after it was allegedly found that his license had expired. He was also suspected to be under the influence of liquor.

The Venter couple leaves behind children and grandchildren, as well as many friends in the area.

“Martie lived in the area all her life and everyone liked her. She was always friendly and had the nicest laugh,” one Fochville resident remembers.

“They were our strength and our pride and had been made strong by the powerful God, our Shepherd and Protector. They helped many people and was a blessing to everyone. May peace rest on them,” said their son, Martin, on Tuesday.

They will be buried from the AGS Church in Bloukrans Street in Carletonville at 11:00 on October 21.

Although the Herald contacted the Fochville station commander, Lieutenant Commander Kgomotso Netshitangani, about the incident, she did not provide feedback.
