Family seeks justice after hit-and-run tragedy claims life of Khutsong breadwinner

He was the breadwinner of his family.

A family is currently grieving in Khutsong after a hit-and-run accident that took place on September 13 around 05:00 on the road towards Ext 5 near the Carletonville Mall.

The victim was identified as 23-year-old Andile Ncube, the breadwinner of his family who juggled between two jobs.

The family was apparently informed through social media that there was a male person who had been found dead in the early morning and the accident was then brought to light.

The family noticed that the victim had not returned from work and they went to the scene around 08:00. They then went to the Carletonville Police Station to identify the body.

Unfortunately, they were informed on the day that the investigating officer had gone on leave for 10 days and was unable to address the family regarding the incident, but he later contacted them. The family felt that there was a problem with the case as they did not receive the attention they expected.

The first time they went to the police station they were told that the case was not captured.

They asked to see the Station Commander but they were assigned to someone else who could help, who assisted in finding the docket. It was then mentioned that the suspect did report the incident and said that he noticed that he bumped into something but drove on as it was still dark.
Some witnesses mentioned that there was a white car and a police van on the scene on that morning but when the family arrived the car was not there. The family says they feel that the suspect was being protected as it did not make sense that the suspect reported the incident but was not arrested.

”We are not sure what really happened and we are still waiting for a forensic investigation because his body looked like he was dragged as he had bruises and scars all over,” expressed one of the family members. The family feels deeply saddened about the victim’s death as he was loved and they demand justice to be served. The victim provided for his mother and his death has affected her terribly as she felt like the police were not taking the case seriously and there is a suspicion that the victim could have been killed somewhere else and dumped there on the road.

The deceased was buried the next Saturday at the Khutsong South Graveyard. The family laid their loved one to rest without closure as there was no footage to prove what took place on that fatal morning.

“We are still asking ourselves a lot of questions as we are not sure what really happened to our brother and we feel that the police were not doing their job,” the family member expressed. The entire family is still hurting. According to his family, the victim did not have a problem with anyone and was a very kind and forgiving person who loved playing with children and was active.

According to the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Tshepiso Montsho, he was indeed on leave on the day the case was opened but he did make efforts to contact the family during that period. He also added that the suspect in the case is known but could not be arrested as a case of culpable homicide is pending due to an ongoing investigation.
