Khutsong school bus accident: Most learners escape serious injury

Government ambulances from several towns transported the injured learners to hospital.

Luckily most of the learners involved in a serious bus crash at Khutsong this afternoon escaped serious injury.

According to authorities at the scene, the bus was transporting learners from Relebogile Secondary School in Khutsong when the vehicle in front of it suddenly stopped. The bus fell over when the driver tried to swerve.

The accident occurred in a slipway at the big traffic light at the crossing next to the Khutsong police station.

According to the district manager of Gauteng emergency services in the West Rand, Jurgens Bence, emergency services were alerted of the accident at 14:46 this afternoon.

Nine government ambulances from Khutsong, Carletonville, Wedela, Fochville and Westonaria transported a total of 42 injured schoolchildren to Carletonville Hospital. A response vehicle from Westonaria also attended the scene.

Only one seriously injured

“Luckily only one of the learners was seriously injured,” says Bence.

Authorities are still busy at the scene.

The bus driver was not injured.

This accident occurred just less than three months after the country was shocked when 12 school children were killed when their taxi overturned and started burning near Wedela in July.
