Khutsong sports and culture day engages kids

They could take part in netball and soccer as well as a reading competition and spelling bee.

A special sports and culture day held at Khutsong Extension 6 kept children fit and busy during the school holiday on Monday.

The day was organised by the owner of a local sports club, Teboho Maketsane, together with the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

Netball and five-on-a-side soccer matches were held at an open ground in Extension 6, which is situated next to Welverdiend.

The Ninjas team from Khutsong Extension 4 walked off as winners of the netball tournament after they beat Black Lunatics from Extension 5 20 – 7 in the finals.

The Eagles team from Extension 6 was third.

In the soccer section of the tournament, Young Stars beat Makweru 3 – 2 in the finals. DDC was third.

Children from the community could also take part in an impromptu reading competition and a spelling bee.

Aluncedo Vuzane won the impromptu reading competition with Basetsana Sepatarane as the runner-up and Ezile Nthole coming third.

Anele Nkabinde was the winner of the spelling bee. Anything Sephayana was second and Bontle Mokauke came third. The two winners in the cultural competitions each received a R750 voucher.

“It was the first time that we held such an event in Khutsong. We wanted to get the children off the streets and also celebrate Heritage Month,” says the Gauteng Department of Arts, Culture Sports and Recreation’s programme librarian in the West Rand, Cynthia Matsoele.

She added that the department also wants to start various other activities, such as book clubs, around the area to develop the youngsters.
