Sewer problems plague Khutsong residents and can cause sinkholes

The Merafong City Local Municipality came to look at the overflowing manhole, but never returned to fix the problem.

Residents of Khutsong Ext 3 still have to live along huge sewage leaks next to their homes.
One of these residents, Eva Nganga of house no. 6543 complain that a manhole in her yard has been overflowing for about three years.

“People from the municipality were here just before the elections They took photos and said that they will return, but they never did,” says Nganga.

The manhole is leaking so badly that the family has dug a canal to channel the sewage from their yard to the nearby veld.

Because other people in the same area have been experiencing similar problems, the excess sewage has been damming up in the open veld next to Hlanganani Primary School for years.
Except for the fact that the sewage is a health risk for the learners, it can also lead to the forming of sinkholes.

Various sinkholes have been forming in this area due to sewage leaks in the past. Meanwhile, just higher up the road from Hlanganani Primary School, there is still a huge hole that was dug up by the municipality around a damaged manhole earlier this year.

This hole is not only dangerous, but the sewage damming up inside it at times can also lead to further sinkholes.

The Merafong City Local Municipality promised to attend to the problems by jetting the blocked sewer lines and replacing the manhole.
