Weekend accidents claim two lives

Emergency services were kept busy last weekend.

Two people died in vehicle accidents in our area over the past weekend.

In the first accident a resident of our area died just outside Carletonville at approximately 14:00 on September 6.

It is suspected that the late Obile Mwatshu, who stayed in the Kusasalethu Hostel, lost control while driving on the R501 just outside Carletonville.

Other motorists noticed the vehicle that he was driving, a red Nissan Qashqai, laying in a ditch on the side of the road just before you turn into Dolomite Drive from the R501. He had seemingly lost control while driving from the big four-way crossing next to the 007 shopping centre.

According to the owner of Gladiator Distress Alert, André van Jaarsveld, Distress Alert Emergency Medical Services received notification of another fatal accident on the N12 the next morning. This accident was close to the border with Westonaria.

“Upon arrival at the scene, our medics discovered two vehicles involved in the accident: a truck with two occupants and a single cab bakkie also carrying two occupants. Regrettably, the woman driving the bakkie was declared dead at the scene. A five-year-old child was present in the bakkie but sustained no injuries.”

“The minor was escorted by police to Westonaria Police Station,” says Van Jaarsveld. The driver of the truck was taken to hospital by a Gauteng Government ambulance, while the passenger was taken by Distress Alert to Carletonville Hospital for medical attention.
