Carletonville police operation yields good successes

Criminals bite the dust during Operation Shanela.

An operation by the police in the Carletonville area led to various arrests and amongst other things, the discovery of a variety of drugs.

Members of several police units joined forces with officials from the Department of Home Affairs, traffic officers and security officers from Harmony Gold and Gladiator during Operation Shanela last month. Crime wardens and some other law enforcers were also part of the action.

The operation, held on August 24, consisted of a roadblock and various searches for criminals.

Detectives who were part of the action arrested five alleged business robbers. Numerous suspects were also arrested for attempted murder, theft, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, housebreaking and theft and impersonating a police officer.

Officials arrested 40 people for drunk driving while 25 illegal immigrants were also apprehended.

An illegal shebeen was closed, while one person was arrested for drug dealing and three people for being in possession of drugs.

Police confiscated 23 packets of the nyaope as well as a syringe full of the liquid form of this hazardous drug. The street drug nyaope usually contains heroin, cannabis and antiretrovirals. Sixty-six rocks of cocaine, 22 mandrax tablets and five packets of crystal meth were also confiscated. Gold bearing rocks were also seized and illegal liquor was taken off the streets.
