Construction site at reservoir robbed

Several of the criminals were armed.

Robbers struck the site where a municipal contractor is repairing the 007 reservoir this week.
The incident took place on August 29.

Three security guards were busy with routine duties when a group of about ten thugs approached the site at approximately 22:30. Some of the criminals pulled out firearms and stormed the guards.

They grabbed the guards, ordered them to lie on the ground and tied them up inside a container at the site. The criminals grabbed the guards’ cellphones, but luckily did not injure them. A truck later arrived at the site and the criminals loaded plastic pipes and copper cables onto it. The criminals then drove away.

Luckily the guards managed to untie themselves after some time and walked to the Carletonville Police Station to report the incident.

The 007 reservoir has not been in use since a sinkhole collapsed under the pipeline in 2015. The current contractors have been at the site to repair this reservoir and pipeline for most of the past year.

“The work at this project is expected to be completed anytime soon,” said the municipality’s Temba Fezani after the Herald asked about the matter.
