Merafong responsible for removing posters

Residents are complaining.

It is the Merafong City Local Municipality’s responsibility to remove the election posters still visible in towns after the election.

Although two months have already passed since the national and provincial elections on May 29, there are still several posters of some political parties on street poles. Throughout this week, many poles still had posters tied to it, especially in Carletonville’s streets.

The posters spotted during the past weeks either belong to the EFF or the ANC, who seem to have forgotten to remove them.

“Don’t these people realise that the election is already finished?” the owner of a business in Station Street in Carletonville complained.

Most of the posters are on poles in the main roads of town, such as Station Street, Annan Road and Coronation Street.

The Herald took the issue to the municipality recently and enquired about the legislation in this regard, and whether they could take any steps against political parties who do not remove their posters.

“The political parties have five days after an election activity to remove the election posters. Political parties were reminded of this bylaw immediately after the election. The bylaw doesn’t have any sanction for political parties who don’t remove their posters, therefore the municipality will have to remove them,” explained the municipality’s marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani.
