Police arrest alleged gang members

A tip-off about an illegal firearm led to the arrest.

Carletonville police have arrested several foreign nationals who were linked to a murder as well as robberies in the area. Detectives said the suspects, who have reportedly been terrorising the local community, were arrested in Khutsong, Extension 5.

The arrests were made when authorities acted on information about three Sotho-speaking men at a home with a possible illegal firearm in their possession.

Police seized an unlicenced firearm. Further investigation revealed that the men were involved in a murder at Rooipoort at the beginning of July as well as several robberies that took place at filling stations around Carletonville recently.

It also came to light that three other men had also been involved in the recent crimes. The three other suspects were also apprehended.

The men, aged between 20 and 26 are all either Lesotho, Mozambican or Malawian nationals. They are expected to appear in court during the week.
