Easter tournament a huge success

This big tournament helped local businesspeople as well.

The Elijah Barayi Easter Tournament was a huge success, with many teams from around the area participating.

According to an organiser, Puleng Mogorosi, eight soccer- and four netball teams participated in this year’s event. It was the third year that the tournament happened at the Elijah Barayi mega housing complex.
In the soccer finals, Makwero, a team from Khutsong, beat last year’s winners, Team Good from Fochville. Neither team had scored by the end of the official match time, and Makwero triumphed 4–2 in the penalty shootout.

The team Blue Train, also from Khutsong, was third.

The winners walked off with R20,000 and a trophy, medals and new kits, while the runners-up went home with R10,000, a new kit and medals. The third-place winners earned themselves R5,000 and medals.

In the netball category, the Flames from Fochville beat Elijah Barayi to walk off as winners. That secured them a trophy, a new kit and medals.

“This was our biggest tournament so far. Besides helping the teams, small businesspeople from Elijah Barayi could also make money by selling goods to the spectators,” says another organiser, Tsolofelo Mosekari.

The local mines and numerous businesses in the area sponsored the event.

The Flames (in black and white) won the netball section of the tournament.
