Various problems around municipal facility

Kokosi residents struggle to get help.

A sewage leak, long grass and no electricity are only some of the issues Kokosi residents face at a municipal facility in the town.

By the afternoon of Thursday, 28 March, pedestrians had to watch their step around Thusanang Clinic.

The reason was that sewage was streaming down the street between the clinic and Rudo Home Base Care, a non-profit facility for orphans and vulnerable children.

So much sewage leaked from the maintenance hole that it streamed around the corner into the main road to Reakgona Primary School.

The leak originated at an overflowing maintenance hole on the street by the municipal pay point adjacent to the clinic.

“It has leaked like this since Tuesday, and it will continue for at least the whole long weekend because the municipality does not heed our calls,” a furious resident complained.

Residents pointed out that the ongoing sewage leak is a health risk for clinic patients, the Rudo centre, and passing pedestrians.

They also pointed out that the pay point in the yard next to the clinic has not been used for some time.

The electricity has been down since December, and the stand is severely overgrown.

“We are afraid that snakes will get through the fence from there,” staff at the clinic complain.

Community members also alerted the Herald to the low water pressure at the facility, affecting community vegetable gardens at the site.

The Herald took the issues to the municipality on Tuesday 2 April.

“Sewer leaks recur, and the municipality attends to them as and when they do. We will investigate and attend to them.

According to the municipal cleaning schedule, the team will attend to Thusanang Clinic by the end of this week,” said the municipal spokesperson, Mr Temba Fezani.
