License renewals a problem

Law-abiding motorists are struggling to get their vehicle licenses renewed.

Residents complained this week that they could not renew their licences at the Merafong City Local Municipality’s licensing department.

“We can neither register nor renew our licences. The system has been offline for a while already,” complained a resident, Mr Rudi Gouws, this week.

Other residents also raised concerns via social media. “We cannot get any information about this problem; the only people on site are security personnel who cannot say when they will resolve the problem,” he laments.

Because the municipal system was offline, residents lamented that the discs to be renewed did not reflect on the eNatis website, meaning those affected could not go elsewhere to get the job done.

As far as can be determined, vehicle and driver’s licences have been affected.

Those affected hoped the municipality would not impose fines for late renewals because the municipal system was at fault.

The Herald took the issue to the municipality on Monday.

“Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) runs the system nationally on behalf of the Department of Transport. For the past week, the eNatis system has been on and offline. Merafong City is not the only municipality experiencing these system challenges.

“Motorists are advised to renew their discs online or through the post office until the system is back to normal,” the municipality’s spokesperson responded.
