SPCA opens cases after abuse

The Carletonville SPCA has opened criminal cases of animal abuse after two incidents this week.

According to Ms Carla Sutherland of the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), concerned community members contacted them at about 09:00 on Wednesday, 13 March. They complained that a man was beating a dog “half to death” outside a yard. They also shared a video of the attack on social media.

SPCA staff rushed to the scene with members of the Carletonville police and managed to rescue the injured animal. They heard the man had beaten the dog because it had caught a chicken.

The SPCA had to drive up and down to find the perpetrator, who seemed to be running from them, as the yard where the incident occurred was not his own but that of an acquaintance. After numerous trips with the police to find the perpetrator, the SPCA managed to track him down near Station Street.

“When we eventually got him, he claimed to need education on what he was supposed to do with the dog,” says Sutherland.

The man was charged with the offence.

At about 06:00 on Friday, 15 March, the public complained about a man keeping dogs in small cages in his yard on Bluebell Street in Carletonville. “We had warned this man before and removed two female dogs,” says Sutherland.

Meanwhile, the SPCA thanked members of the public and local businesses who had recently helped them with donations.
