Damaged road left open

Motorists must be careful at this intersection near the Mini Ok in Oberholzer.

Motorists driving on Oranje Street in Oberholzer must beware of damaging their vehicles in the mess municipal workers left behind.

Early last Friday morning, residents living near the corner of Oranje and Blyvoor streets realised that hardly any water was coming from their taps. As the first people started going to work, they noticed that the problem stemmed from a burst water pipe at this corner.

Many households were stuck without water as municipal workers took hours to replace the broken pipe. They eventually finished the work after 15:00 and scraped the loose ground and pieces of tar they dug out over the hole.

The municipal workers did not bother to cordon off the still damaged part of the road, despite it still being uneven with pieces of tar sticking out. Residents put tree stumps on top of the damaged section, several metres wide, to ensure that motorists did not drive into it by accident over the weekend.

By Tuesday, the road had still not been repaired.

The Herald asked the municipality about the matter, and the municipal spokesperson said that the site will be fixed.
