Potholes remain despite bags of tar in storage

Municipality has no excuses for not fixing roads.

While many residents of Fochville and Kokosi have to struggle over dangerous potholes, the Merafong City Local Municipality is sitting with a supply of tar in storage.

“Look at this damaged road. We, as the community, fixed it last year but it was damaged again due to the many vehicles using it,” a resident of Kokosi, Mr Macist Ndubatha, said on Friday, 12 January.

He pointed to the road at the crossing next to Imfundo Secondary School.
The residents tried to repair the huge potholes at this crossing, which is in Kokosi’s main ring road, Lembede Drive, with cement and paving stones towards the end if last year after the municipality failed to assist.

The road was so bad that drivers had to stop almost completely not to damage their vehicles.

Despite many complaints, the municipality is still not helping to repair this road.

“This is unacceptable because the municipality has the supplies to fix this road,” Ndubatha complains.

He even went to show the Herald the bags of tar stacked in a warehouse at the back of the municipal traffic offices in Kokosi.

“Why does the municipality not use this to fix all the potholes in our area?” he complains. Ndubatha also pointed out that Harmony Gold had donated equipment to the municipality towards the end of last year that could be used to repair potholes. The Herald took the issues to the municipality on Tuesday, but they did not respond.
