Service delivery forgotten in Fochville street

Residents of a street in Fochville have to endure constant rubbish dumping on their doorstep as well as a water leak that is just not being attended to.

Although Fochville is generally a neat town, one of its streets is among the dirtiest in the entire Merafong City Local Municipality.

Residents living at the corner of Munt and Kort streets have complained about people dumping rubbish in this area for years. They have contacted the municipality several times and have even tried to confront the people and businesses throwing garbage in the veld at this corner.

The problem seems to be that the corner is a block from the rubbish nightmare next to the municipal licensing offices and vehicle testing station on Danie Theron Street. People have been dumping their rubbish here for years because the Fochville rubbish transfer station around the corner is not functioning.

Only a narrow gravel road separates the two streets. Pedestrians use this “path” because all the rubbish on and next to it makes it impossible for vehicles to drive on.

The dumping at the corner of Munt and Kort streets has now spread to the entire open veld in Kort Street.

So much rubbish has been dumped in this veld that it looks more like a dumping site than a small park at the end of the town.

The water streaming from the sidewalk next to one of the Kort Street houses makes matters worse.

It was still leaking on Monday despite the municipality’s knowledge of the problem. The water seems to come from a leaking water meter.

“The municipality will investigate and fix the leak. Once again, we encourage residents to use the municipal call centre to report all service delivery complaints and queries by calling (018) 788 9990 or WhatsApp 082 516 0794,” the acting municipal marketing and communications manager, Ms Nomonde Mahube, responded.
