Robbers’ escape thwarted

Fast action by two off-duty police officers led to the arrest of a robber and the recovery of all the gang's loot this week.

The incident started at Carletonville Mall on the afternoon of Thursday, 2 November.
The manager of the Mr Price store was preparing to lock up the shop at approximately 17:50 when a man walked in.
He showed the manager his firearm and told him to go to the back of the store.
Another two robbers walked in and took the keys to the cell phone safe.
They grabbed several cell phones and money and ran out of the shop.
The thugs jumped into a white Isuzu bakkie.
Two off-duty police officers, a Carletonville detective Sgt Thabo Kharejane and Captain Peter Masooa of the Khutsong police, were at the mall and saw the robbers speeding away.
They jumped into their vehicles and chased after the robbers, who were heading in the Khutsong direction.
On the way there, the robbers’ bakkie went off the road, and the three suspects jumped out.
The police officers caught one of them, but the others managed to escape. However, the robbers’ bakkie with all their loot was recovered.
