Man shoots girlfriend

Drama after gender-based violence case.

An incident last week proved that gender-based violence is still rife in our area.

As far as could be determined, the victim (45) met her boyfriend at the Masazikhele hostel bus stop in East Driefontein at around 19:35 on 21 September. She allegedly confronted him about an affair. During the confrontation, he drew a firearm and fired three shots, hitting her in both hands and left foot and thigh. She was rushed to Carletonville Hospital for treatment.

Although the boyfriend was initially thought to have fled to the Eastern Cape, he was captured next to the P111 on Monday. Vehicles had to be stopped temporarily when he tried to take his life near the road at about 14:50. The man, still armed, climbed onto a pylon near the R559 to Randfontein and threatened to jump off. Police convinced him to get down and hand himself over. They confiscated his firearm and took him into custody.
