Metcalfe excels at another grueling 100 miler

Fochville's star ultra-marathon runner, Cornel Metcalfe, bagged yet another medal in a race that very few athletes would try to attempt.

Last weekend, Cornel lined up with 11 other athletes to participate in the Dawn 2 Dusk 100 Miler circuit race at the Gerrit Maritz High School in Pretoria.
The annual race is part of the Dawn 2 Dusk 12-Hour Relay one-km circuit race to raise funds for various charities. The 100 Milers started at 16:00 on Friday and ran through the night until 06:00 when 109 teams starting the 12-hour team relay joined them. The athletes had 26 hours until 18:00 to complete the rigorous distance.
Cornel came second overall when she finished in 19 hours and 59 minutes.
Only eight of the 12 athletes who started the race completed the distance before the 26-hour cutoff time. It was the 34th 100-mile race she had completed and her sixth for 2023.
Cornel’s next big race will be at the end of September when she will tackle the Karkloof 100 Miler Trail race. On completion, she will be the third woman in SA to complete the AMUK Trail Challenge in a single calendar year.
The AMUK Challenge consists of four of SA’s iconic trail races, of which Cornel has already completed three this year, namely the Addo, MacMac and Ultra Drakensberg races.
