Swimming pools’ opening schedules on track

The municipality says that the swimming pools in Fochville and Carletonville could be ready for opening on 1 September.

Although the municipal swimming season officially begins then, the Fochville swimming pool has not been opened to the public since before the Covid-19 pandemic. The condition of the swimming pool worsened over time, and the ablutions and other buildings were vandalised.
The Merafong City Local Municipality promised in January that it had appointed a service provider to refurbish the pool. Contractors were seen repairing damaged infrastructure and working on the swimming pool in April.
On Monday, someone had been working at the pool as the ablutions window was repaired and was partially open. However, the grass was still long, the fence and several windows were still damaged, and what seemed to be parts of a damaged ceiling still lay on the grass.
Meanwhile, the Carletonville swimming pool had not opened since before last year’s festive season and previously opened only after the start of the official swimming season.
The Herald asked the municipality about the state of the swimming pools on Tuesday.
“The Gert van Rensburg swimming pool project is on track.
The ablution facilities have been done, and the pool is clean and painted. The municipality is currently busy with repairs to the pump room, and we intend to ensure that both swimming pools are ready to open by 1 September 2023,” reported Mrs Nomonde Mahube, the municipal communication officer.
