CJ’s debaters excel

The debating team of Carletonville Jones High School is holding the town's name high.

Members of the team recently appeared on television after winning the Gauteng West finals.
According to the team leader, Gr. 11 learner Michael Amogelang, they had to prepare three topics for the finals. The learners had to debate for and against the heavy topics: “Youth voter apathy is caused by a disinterest in politics”; “Coalition governments contribute to political instability, how they should or should not work”; and “Freedom of expression versus the abuse of rights”.
Despite this, and that two new debaters had to join the team at the last moment after the brother of one of the team members got sick, they still managed to beat all their opponents and enjoy it too.
“Debating is an exhilarating experience and helps you master the English language and improve your logical reasoning. It has become a part of who I am,” enthusiastic Amogelang told the Herald.
