Video: Merafong rubbish truck drives into sinkhole

The Merafong City Local Municipality’s rubbish removal schedule was disrupted by an unusual incident today.

One of its rubbish removal trucks drove into the cul-de-sac in Umkumaas Street in Carletonville at approximately 11:40. Although the municipality cordoned this area off due to a small sinkhole on the road surface more than a month ago, the heap of ground that stopped motorists from entering, has been partially pushed to the side since this time.

The rubbish truck’s driver did not see the small sinkhole and drove over it. The sinkhole caved in further and two of the truck’s wheels got stuck in it.

Municipal workers at the scene said the municipality was getting a crane to remove the truck from the sinkhole.

Although today’s refuse removal services were disrupted by the accident, another vehicle did extra rounds to try to catch up.

Luckily no-one was injured.
