Taxi killers strike again

Yet another taxi owner from our area was slain by unknown gunmen this week.

The Carletonville police say Mr Mandlakayise Hlamaphi (41), a member of CALLDTA (the Carletonville Local and Long-Distance Taxi Association) drove to the shop at the Caltex filling station in Annan Road to buy bread at approximately 21:00 on 5 May.
Two unknown men approached Hlamaphi as he came out of the shop and walked towards his silver Toyota Corolla in the parking area.
The men, who were both carrying 9 mm pistols, started shooting at Hlamaphi. Although he tried to run away, Hlamaphi fell to the ground, and his assailants continued shooting and only left when they saw he was dead.
They then ran to an unknown car parked in one of the parking bays opposite the filling station and raced away.
The police suspect the killing was another “hit” in the ongoing war in the area’s taxi industry.
The police’s specialised taxi violence unit is also investigating the case.
