Suspect tracked down

A young Carletonville man on the run from police for two months was eventually tracked down and arrested in the Eastern Cape this week.

The Carletonville police were looking for the suspect, Givan Steenkamp (28), since early February, in connection with the theft of a firearm.
As the search for Steenkamp continued, more victims and witnesses came forward with further crimes he was allegedly involved in. These cases include theft, robbery, vehicle theft, theft out of a vehicle and even a hit and run incident. According to the police, these alleged crimes occurred in the Carletonville area, Rustenburg, Florida, Krugersdorp and Olievenhoutbosch in Centurion.
Thanks to tips from the public, Steenkamp was eventually tracked down in Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth, on 4 April.
Steenkamp appeared in the Oberholzer Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 11 April and was denied bail. The case was postponed to 19 April for a formal bail application.
The police warn those who helped Steenkamp evade arrest that they will soon also be charged. Those who have already opened a criminal case against Steenkamp or might have been wronged by him and have not yet opened a case should contact Sgt Wynand Kruger of the Carletonville detectives at 065 968 9630.
