Cash-in-transit robbers wreak havoc

Several motorists had to turn around hastily when a group of cash-in-transit robbers struck in one of Carletonville’s busiest streets on Saturday.

According to the Carletonville police, personnel from the G4S security company had just picked up their last batch of money at Carletonville Mall at approximately 16:10 and were heading back towards Carletonville when the incident took place.
They were nearing the four-way stop at the junction of Station and Coronation streets when a blue Mercedes-Benz C-class sedan raced up to them. The Mercedes crashed into the cash-in- transit van and the people in the vehicle started shooting at both the van and its support vehicle. They were almost immediately joined by accomplices in other vehicles, who also shot at the G4S personnel with AK47 and R5 rifles.
They pulled the driver of the cash-in-transit van and his fellow crew member out and forced them to stay on the road at gunpoint. They also forced the driver of the support vehicle and his colleague out onto the ground.

The robbers then blew up the van with explosives and raced away with an undisclosed amount of money.
Paramedics soon arrived at the scene and assessed four patients – the driver and crew of the cash-in-transit van and the driver and crew of the support vehicle. They found that they had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate. ER24 paramedics, along with an-other medical service at the scene, treated the patients before transporting them to the hospital for further medical care.
Residents of the nearby Magaliesberg Street and surrounding areas stared in shock from their homes as the crime unfolded before them.
At the time of the news- paper going to print, no one had been arrested in connection with the crime.
There has recently been an increase in cash-in-transit robberies in the area. The last of them took place on the P111 on 8 November, just over a month ago.
