Hijackers strike at home

A woman and her daughter were hijacked in Coronation Street in Carletonville on Friday, 19 November, in what police suspect was a burglary gone wrong.

The woman immediately realised that something was wrong when she and her daughter arrived home near Barnard Street, at about 12:40. They saw a white Toyota Tazz in their driveway and noticed that their gate had been forced open. Before they could react, four men stormed out of their house and ran towards them. They pulled the woman and her daughter out of their car and threw them onto the ground. The thugs then loaded the goods they had stolen from the home into the gold-coloured Toyota Corolla. They jumped in and sped off at such a speed that they drove over the mother. Luckily, she was not seriously injured and managed to call for help. Security personnel from Gladiator Community Protection were on the scene quickly and gave chase. The suspects’ Tazz was still standing in the family’s driveway. Gladiator chased after the robbers until the latter abandoned the Corolla in the veld opposite the area between Vaal Maseru and Fochville. Although the robbers managed to escape, they left all the stolen goods and the cell phone the daughter had left in the car during the incident. All the items were recovered. The woman was taken to Carletonville Hospital and was in a stable condition by the time of the newspaper going to print. The police suspect that the criminals were not from around Merafong.
