‘Tell people to stay positive’

‘Tell people to stay positive’

So says a unique activist who walked through our area this week, pulling a cross on a small cart.
Mr Patrick Styles (60) walked into Carletonville on the R500 from Magaliesburg at about 13:00 on Monday. It was the fourth time he had walked through the town to raise awareness of farm murders.
What is unique about Styles is that he does not expect money or goods. He just wants more people to pray for an end to this type of crime.
“I do not want anything. If God wants to give me a million, he will give me a million,” he says.
According to Styles, he had worked on the mines in Rustenburg for 33 years before being boarded due to a back injury.
After this, he became a re-born Christian and started walking for the cause.
Styles, who lives on a farm near Derby in North West with his wife, has been taking to the road with his cross and cart three or four times a year since 2013.
“I have walked between 30,000 and 40,000 km so far and have done about 6,000 km so far this year,” he says.
Although Styles was robbed once at De Doorns near Cape Town, police later told him the culprits had repented after hearing what he was doing. Besides this, Styles says he has only encountered good people on the way.
He always sets out with just the lunch box his wife packs for him and some water.
As he continues on the road, friends and other people who want to help him always make sure he has somewhere to sleep over and gets something to eat.
Styles’ walking has taken him from Mpumalanga to Cape Town and many towns in between.
He has even walked to Zimbabwe and met Khoisan King Thomas Edgar Brown during a visit to the Union Buildings in Pretoria earlier this year. The Khoisan King supported his cause and prayed with him.
He slept over in Carletonville on Monday night before setting off for Fochville.
From there, he planned to walk to Parys and Vanderbijlpark.
According to Styles, farm murders could be stopped if more people pray for this to happen.
“Tell people to stay positive and pray for our farmers,” was his message before setting off again.
