Another taxi owner murdered

The local taxi industry was hit by yet another murder this week.

According to the Carletonville police, Mr Mthetheleni Selami, a taxi owner and driver belonging to the Carletonville Local and Long Distance Taxi Association (CALLDTA) was in his taxi at the Carletonville Taxi Rank on Friday, 24 September when the incident happened.
At around 18:30, three unknown men walked into the rank and went straight to where Selami was parked near the information kiosk.
Without saying a word, one of them pulled out a handgun and started shooting at him.
Selami was hit in his head, neck, arms and legs and passed away from his injuries at the scene. The men then ran away.
Selami, a resident of Wedela, was in his early 40s.
The intensity of the attack was evident when the police later picked up 12 empty 9 mm cartridges at the scene.
According to the police, the shooting happened at exactly the same spot in the Carletonville Taxi Rank where another CALLDTA owner was killed in March this year.
The police’s special taxi violence unit is investigating the case.
As a result of the killings in our area, the Merafong City Local Municipality is holding a special prayer session to address taxi and police killings at the Carletonville Sports Complex at 10:00 on Thursday, 30 September.
