Water leaking for years

Residents living in the Aloe Street area in Carletonville fear that a sinkhole may develop from an ongoing water leak.

Water has been leaking from the road surface in front of Avondgloor in Aloe Street for years.
Although it used to trickle down the street, the leak has recently become worse.
During the past week, the clean drinking water has been leaking into Lobelia Street too.
The ward councillor, Mr Devin Nieuwenhuizen, says he has been reporting the matter for more than four years.
“It is now going on for five years and the municipality still has not done anything about it,” he says.
Residents are concerned that the ongoing leak may cause a sinkhole, which could not only damage residential houses but also Avondgloor, where frail elderly people are cared for.
The Herald took the concerns to the Merafong City Local Municipality on Tuesday.
Their explanation was similar to some of the one’s they used before, however. “The municipality is awaiting the material and the matter will be attended to as soon as possible,” the spokesperson said.
