Transport leader’s murder shocks

In the second suspected assassination in our area in less than a week, the chairperson of a major transport organisation was gunned down at home in the past week.

According to the Carletonville police, the incident happened on Thursday, 29 July. The late Mr Oria MacDonald Ditsele (43), chairperson of the Merafong Education Transport Association, had just stepped out of his home in the new Khutsong Extension 6 next to Welverdiend at approximately 04:00 when the incident happened. Ditsele had not yet got into his taxi to pick up the children on his normal route and take them to school when someone shot him several times. Ditsele was hit in the head, chest and upper body, among other places. Neighbours heard the shots and ran out to see what was happening. They were too late to see the attacker or attackers, however. Ditsele passed away before he could receive medical attention. Nothing was stolen during the attack. The police later recovered 13 spent cartridges at the scene. Messages of condolence streamed in after Ditsele’s death and people asked the municipality to bury him as a local dignitary. Many people noted that he had initiated getting the local taxi industry involved in the local campaign to ensure that no looting took place in Merafong. The mayor, Mr Mogomutsi Sello, called for calm after his brutal murder. “You stood firm against looting. Your name will be remembered among those who protected the little we have,” the mayor honoured Ditsele’s memory. Some parents whose children were still waiting outside for Ditsele to pick them up for school also expressed their shock when they learnt about it on social media. His memorial service took place at Khutsong Stadium on Thursday, 5 August. Another member of the local transport industry, a taxi owner who was a member of the Carletonville Local and Long Distance Taxi Association (CALLDTA) was also gunned down at his home in Khutsong Ext. 5 on the evenining of Monday, 26 July. Police later recovered 12 spent cartridges at the scene. A driver, who was also hit in this attack, was not seriously injured.
