Third wave hits Gauteng

“The storm is here,” said Gauteng Premier David Makhura while opening the new West Wits Hospital today.

According to the Premier, the third wave of Covid-19 has now officially hit our province. “On Monday there were just about 600 new cases a day, by yesterday they were just over 1 200,” he said at the event. He again warned that residents must wear their masks, do social distancing and not hold large “superspreader” events.

“Don’t think you can go to a party and not get it. We have to play it safe,” he said. In the meantime, there has also been a lot of new cases in the West Rand.

The Merafong City Local Municipality’s new Covid-19 cases grew by nine from yesterday, while the cases in Mogale City (the Krugersdorp area) increased by 31.

This is the highest daily increase in this area in months. The cases in Rand West City (the Randfontein and Westonaria area) also increased by 14 cases.

There are now a total of 5 363 cases in Merafong, of which 5 071 patients have recovered at 214 have died.
