ATM thieves still active in Carletonville

Residents should exercise extreme caution when drawing money from ATMs in Carletonville.

The Carletonville police recently warned of an increasing number of thieves targeting people who draw cash, especially at relatively quiet ATMs.

A resident of Fochville, Mrs Corlia Janse van Vuuren, is involved in the fight against crime as part of the Fochville AfriForum branch. She says her friend was a victim of such a crime on Tuesday. says she accompanied her to the FNB ATM at Shoprite in Carletonville just before 10:00. The woman was busy with a transaction when a man in a navy blue uniform appeared next to her as if out of nowhere.

“He said he worked there and grabbed my friend’s card from her hand,” Janse van Vuuren says. Although her friend got the card back and inserted it into the ATM, she then could not get it out again. The women waited at the ATM for some time but the card never came out again. However, before the friend had time to cancel her card, the thieves had drawn all the money from her account. “We think the man hung around until he saw us leave. He probably slipped a coin or something in the machine to stop the card from coming out. “People must be extremely careful of these criminals,” says Janse van Vuuren.
