Carletonville athlete excels at Nationals

A young athlete from Carletonville is still holding the town’s name high.

Marceghlle Wakefield (14) started the athletics year with a bang after many competitions were cancelled due to Covid-19 last year.

The former learner of Jongspan Primary now attends Noordheuwel High School in Krugersdorp. He started his first high school athletics at the interhouse this year, breaking the record in the 1 500 m with a time of 4:22 and setting a new record in the 800 m in a time of 2:06.

On 19 and 20 March, he ran at the NWU and ACNW club athletics meeting in Potchefstroom, where all interprovincial clubs were represented. Here, he won the 800 m again, in a time of 2:08. He also came first in the 1 500 m with a time of 4:26.

Marceghlle also took part in the CGA (Central Gauteng Athletics) Junior and Senior Championships on 31 March. He competed against older athletes, taking part in the u.16 category of this event.

Despite this, Marceghlle came second in the 800 m in a time of 2:03 and qualified for the National Championships. The ASA National Championships took place in Paarl in the Western Cape from 7 to10 April.

Although he competed in the under 16 age category again, Marceghlle came third in the 800 m, in a time of 2:00. This was just three seconds behind the winner.
