Callies are Merafong’s top matric achievers

Despite the disruptions brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, Merafong’s matrics of 2020 performed well.

Although none of the schools from our area obtained a 100 per cent pass rate, none of them scored below 50 per cent. Hoërskool Carletonville is this year’s top achiever after 95.8 per cent of the school’s 143 matrics passed their final exams. The school’s acting principal, Mr Deon Le Roux, says the learners obtained 29 As, 124 Bs and 225 Cs. The school’s matrics obtained a 100 per cent pass rate in Afrikaans Home Language, Afrikaans First Additional Language, English First Additional Language, Mathematical Literacy, Con-sumer Studies, Dramatic Arts and Engineering Graphics and Design. Elzani van Wyk was the school’s best achiever with six distinctions – for Afrikaans Home Lang- uage, English First Additional Language, Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation, Business Studies and Tourism. Tshepang Thoabala and Ntando Golimpi both obtained three distinctions each. Eighty-five of the school’s matrics qualified to enrol for degrees, 48 for diploma courses and five for higher certificate courses. “It is with gratitude to our Heavenly Father, a supportive governing body, a competent management team, dedicated teachers and conscientious learners and their parents or guardians that we have obtained these achievements,” says Le Roux. Carleton Jones High School’s 169 matrics achieved a pass rate of 93.49 per cent, while 91.34 per cent of Hoërskool Fochville’s 104 Gr.12s passed matric.

Imfundo Secondary School, which had 139 matrics last year, was the best achiever in Kokosi with a pass rate of 89.05 per cent. Fochville Secondary School, with its 46 matrics, also had a good 82.60 per cent success rate. Hoërskool Wonderfontein’s 113 matrics scored an 81.41 per cent pass rate. Tswasongu Secondary School walked off as Khutsong’s best achievers when its 131 matrics obtained an 80.15 per cent pass rate. Despite its many problems with illegal miners, Wedela Technical High School still managed to obtain a pass rate of 77.77 per cent. The school had 117 matrics last year. Badirile Secondary School’s 215 matrics obtained a 74.19 per cent pass rate, while the 131 matrics of Thuto Kitso Comprehensive School had a pass rate of 69.46 per cent. Relebogile Secondary School’s 220 matrics had a pass rate of 68.63 per cent. Just outside Merafong’s boundaries, Glenharvie Combined School’s 65 matrics also achieved a pass rate of 81.53 per cent. According to Hoërskool Fochville’s principal, Mrs Ronel Lampbrecht, all the school’s learners who passed qualified for further tertiary education. Sixty-six per cent of them have university exemption, 25 per cent qualify for diploma courses and eight per cent can attend college. Lizmari Helm is the school’s top achiever with six distinctions in Afrikaans, English, Life Orientation, Business Studies, Economics and Computer Application Technology. Jakobus Etsebeth obtained five distinctions, Ruan Coetzee and Leah Liebenberg, four and Junayé Pretorius and Boipelo Mangwejane three distinctions. “We are very proud of our Mathematics department, with a pass rate of 98,2 per cent for Mathematical Literacy, the best results in Technical Mathematics and another 100 per cent pass in Mathematics. No one can rival these results. Our Technical department is near perfect with a pass of 99 per cent for our technical learners,” says Wonderfontein High School’s acting principal, Mr Danie Beeslaar.
