Medical waste thrown on sidewalk

Pedestrians should be alert as some medical waste has been dumped on one of Carletonville’s busiest sidewalks.

On Monday, a resident who lives near the corner of Annan Road and Kaolin Street in Carletonville noticed that medication had been dumped on the sidewalk. He says that rubbish being dumped on this sidewalk has been a huge problem for some time. “They often dump rubbish and then set it alight. This is not good for my sinuses,” he complains. Monday’s rubbish was a bit different, however. When the Herald went to check the site, a heap of medicine was lying under a tree. Although most of the pill bottles seemed to be empty, some bottles sounded as if they contained medication. Some of the bottles bore labels of the Eastern Cape’s Department of Health. Some of the other bottles were for highly-addictive medication for severe pain. To make matters worse, several empty bottles seemed to have con- tained injectable medicines. The Herald took the concerns to the Merafong City Local Municipality on Tuesday. “Dumping medical waste illegally is a serious offence and should be reported to the municipality immediately. We would appreciate it if the community could provide a witness to the dumping of medical waste. “The waste department will pay attention to this particular area,” a municipal spokesperson said.
