According to the communications officer of the police in Carletonville, WO Peter Masooa, the incident happened at approximately 05:00 on Saturday morning.
The man later told the police that the guards had accused him of stealing a cell phone.
They then allegedly threatened to kill him before handcuffing him to a chair and hitting him with knobkerries.
They only let him go after they had broken his right leg.
The police in Carletonville are investigating a case of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.
