This is how the municipality ‘addresses’ water leaks

This week, the Merafong City Local Municipality insisted it had addressed the water leaks at the Carletonville Sports Centre, even though more water was leaking at the facility than before.

Residents have been complaining about spillage in front and to the side of this centre for years.
On 17 January, the leak in front of the centre looked worse than ever before, with water streaming over the paving to a storm water drain near the main entrance.
‘The municipality repaired the leak a few months ago but it soon started leaking again,’ a security guard told the Herald.
When the Herald asked the municipality about the problem a few days later, a spokesperson still maintained that it had already been attended to.
Last week, the ward councillor, Mr Carlos Rebelo, said he had received more complaints about the leak from members of the public.
By Tuesday morning, the leak in front of the centre was worse than last month.
Initially, the water leak had reached the parking lot but it was now flowing straight into a storm water drain near the main gate.
The grass at the site of the leak to the side of the centre was long and overgrown and suggested that the second leak had still not been attended to either.
Despite the ongoing problems, a municipal spokesperson denied that there was an issue. The municipality’s curt response to the Herald’s queries was simply,
‘Water leaks at sport stadiums have been addressed.’ [sic].
