How to choose the right container for your storage needs

Containers come in different sizes but it is possible to find the perfect fit for different needs. This is what must be considered when making a purchasing decision.

A container is an excellent choice for both temporary and permanent storage. Shipping containers are available in a wide variety of sizes, prices, and configurations to meet specific requirements.

Since a container isn’t a permanent construction, there is no need for any special permits to buy one and place it in the yard. However, it is always safe to check with your local authority first.

Rather than constructing a permanent structure of the same size as a container, it is more cost-effective to simply purchase one. A storage container can also be rented, saving you money over the long run.

Here are the most important considerations to make in order to purchase the perfect container for your storage needs.

1.    The amount of storage time you require

Renting a storage unit could be the most economical option if you only require a space for a relatively short period of time (less than three years). If you choose to rent, you won’t have to worry about repairs or storage when your lease is up.

Containers for sale may be the best option if you need storage for longer than three years. It would take around three years of renting out a container, depending on its age and kind, to cover the purchase price.

When you purchase a container for personal use, you will have the option of reselling it to a new customer after you have finished with it.

2.    The type of items you need to store

When deciding on containers for sale, it’s important to think about the quantity and size of the goods you will be storing in the container. The type of product being stored is also a major consideration.

Naturally, ones intended contents will play a role in determining the optimal size. The smaller unit has a maximum capacity of just over 33 cubic metres, assuming you have a set quantity of goods and it is safe to stack them. A family of four can store their belongings there while their two-bedroom house is being remodelled.

A 40′ container can typically hold the contents of a 100 square metre apartment.

Think about how you will load pipes or other wide items into the container if that’s what you intend to store. An open-side container with double-folding doors or an open-top container with a tarpaulin in place of the roof may be desirable in certain circumstances.

When deciding on a storage facility, you may need to account for seasonal temperature changes, depending on your region.

3.    How often you need to access your storage items

The most time-efficient method of loading cargo into a standard shipping container is from the back towards the double doors at one end.  It will be very inconvenient to get to the items at the back without first unloading the front.

Different door configurations on shipping containers provide more convenient access to goods than the typical door. Such containers include the previously mentioned open sided container and the more common double door container, which has doors on both ends.

Next time you consider buying a container, consider the guidelines provided above.
