Spaza shop closed after tampered consumables found

Three shop owners were also fined.

Spaza shops in the Brakpan CBD were the focus of a law enforcement operation on Thursday.

Local SAPS, the EMPD, CPF and officials from home affairs and the health department inspected the shops to ensure compliance with laws.

Eleven shops were visited, some of which were found to be unregistered. These owners were informed about the process of applying for permits.

A key focus of the operation was to ensure food safety and health compliance.

Shop owners were warned about the dangers of selling expired items, especially food.

One shop was closed after it was found items were being relabeled, remixed and repackaged in a basement at the back of the premises.

Expiry dates on items were also being altered.

This included food, drinks, toiletries and animal feed.

One shop owner was issued a fine for hiring an illegal immigrant and two others were fined for failing to display registration certificates.
