Brakpan netball player brings her A game to the court

Netball Freakz has strong representation in Ekurhuleni.

Ekurhuleni’s senior women’s A side was in fine form when they dominated the Gauteng Championships in Randfontein last weekend.

They beat West Rand 21-11 in the final on Sunday to take the trophy. Brakpan’s Nicole Gertenbach is part of the Ekurhuleni team for the second year in a row.

Nicole and her teammates will represent Ekurhuleni at the SPAR National Championships in Rustenburg from October 1 to 7.

The Netball Freakz player scored the winning goal against Tshwane in the 2022 Gauteng Championships final.

As a player for Netball Freakz and coach for their junior team, Gertenbach spends a lot of time on the netball court. Her mother Elzabe coaches the club.

Netball Freakz has a strong representation in Ekurhuleni. Norma Roets and Zanry Gertenbach will be playing for the U21 A side at the Spar National Championships.

“I practice outdoors twice a week but I play indoors as well on the other days of the week. I play outdoors on Saturdays and Sundays. The only day I get off is a Friday,” Nicole said.

She also played in national championships last year. The 23-year-old has been playing netball for most of her life.

“My mom is a netball coach. I grew up on the courts,” said Nicole.

“That’s where the love for the sport comes from. It’s from watching my mom coaching other girls and wanting to be like them. It’s in the blood.”
