In the spotlight: Get to know the people in our town

Mpho Ramaesa is in the spotlight.

Brakpan High School Grade 12 learner Mpho Ramaesa is the president of the school’s representative council of learners (RCL). The 18-year-old lives in Tsakane with her parents Lucky and Mathula Ramaesa. She has two sisters, Refiloe (13) and Bokang (3).

What do you hope to achieve this year in your role as president of the RCL?

It is within my best interest to make sure that everyone has a role to play in the school or in different projects that we will have during the course of the year.

However, my biggest goal is to make sure that the Learner-to-Learner programme for matrics is successful so that we can achieve a 100 per cent pass rate.

What school subject do you enjoy the most? Why?

Mathematics. It is a fun and challenging subject.

It requires me to think a lot and it tests my brain capacity.

Lastly, the subject consists of numbers, and numbers fascinate me.

Which subject is your least favourite? Why?

Afrikaans. It has always been difficult for me to understand the language and I do not pay much attention to it.

Do you play sport or participate in extra-mural activities. Do you have any hobbies? What do you like most about it/them?

I play netball and I participate in debate, public speaking and moot court.

I love netball because it keeps me physically fit.

Debate and public speaking have always been a part of my school life.

I love these because they help showcase my skills and the research that we always do helps me gain more knowledge.

What are your plans after matric?

My plan is to go to varsity and do my LLB.

I also want to start a foundation for women and children because helping people has always been a part of me.

Name one influential person you would like to meet and what do you want to learn from him/her?

I would like to meet Nomzamo Mbatha (South African actress, television personality, businesswoman and human rights activist) because she inspires me.

She is in her 20s, but she has done so much with her life and the lives of others.

Describe yourself in three words.

Ambitious, inquisitive and smart.

Do you think social media has helped or hurt our society? Why?

It has helped our society.

It has raised awareness on many serious issues such as abuse, corruption and more.

It has also been a great platform for promotion.

What is the biggest challenge facing the youth today?

Self-acceptance and low self-esteem.

It is not something that is frequently talked about, but it is there.

Young people often kill themselves due to having low self-esteem and self-acceptance issues.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself as an LLB graduate and working at a law firm.

I see myself doing my second degree, which is a BSc in Mathematical Sciences.

Lastly, I see myself expanding my foundation and even starting another one, hopefully.

What would be your superpower?

To read people’s minds.
