Disabled pensioner hijacked at mall

A 23-year-old man was arrested this morning (Monday) after he allegedly hijacked an elderly disabled man at knife-point, at the Mall@Carnival.

According to Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan police station commander, the hijacking took place at 10.45am, near Entrance Six.

“A 64-year-old wheelchair-bound man was approached by the suspect, who then threatened him with a knife,” he said.

“The suspect then got into the man’s car, a white Volkswagen Polo, and drove off.”

Joubert told the Herald that members of the community, who witnessed the hijacking, managed to stop the vehicle.

“They pulled the keys from the ignition and tried to arrest the suspect, but he evaded arrest,” he said.

“He was eventually arrested by the security guards and handed over to police.”

The man faces a charge of hijacking.
