Help your child transform old magazines into DIY crafts

If your house is anything like ours, you probably have a slew of old magazines strewn about. If you don’t want to recycle them or haven’t had time to donate them to your child’s school, gather the kids and spend the day making reusable crafts out of old magazines.

Here are some creative suggestions:

1. Create a bowl/vase

This is a simple craft idea that requires only a magazine and a glue gun. Take individual pages and fold them into vertical strips. Begin by creating a base, then glue strips slightly above each other until the shape of a bowl is formed.

2. Create beads

Cut smaller shapes from magazines (such as a triangle, circle, or square), cover all but one edge with a thin strip of glue, and roll into small balls or tubes. To achieve a uniform size/shape, place a thin object in the centre, such as a pencil or toothpick. These can then be combined to make necklaces, decorations, and so on.

2. Create a collage photo frame

This is a lovely gift for a friend or loved one, especially if you cut out words or pictures that have special meaning for them. You can also make a collage out of any other object you can think of; the possibilities are limitless.

4. Construct a woven magazine bag

This is my favourite craft idea: you can make your own personalised handbag out of an old magazine, clear packaging tape, velcro, and scissors.
