The latest generation Golf GTI is available

The first GTI was launched in Frankfurt 45 years ago.

And no guessing why South Africa has become one of the biggest GTI markets in the world – South African drivers have an itch that just cannot resist that power and exhaust note tease offered by the wicked and revered GTI.

It is, says Volkswagen: “The most digitally advanced Golf GTI.

“The 2.0l turbocharged engine now develops 180kW with a torque peak of 370Nm.

“The four-cylinder engine is coupled with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. It takes 6.4 seconds to complete the 0 – 100km/h sprint.”

As with all modern cars, this latest incarnation of the GTI is fitted with a multitude of technical and electronic assistance systems.

The exterior design, in my mind, is classic in the sense that Volkswagen did not deviate radically from the original. Okay – it is not as boxy as the original, it is still edgy and the overall design and low stance is still shouting: Drive me – I am ready – right now – let’s go!

The GTI is not a car that requires all sorts of extras to give it that look – it’s got it! Get it?

Owners will love the new InnoVision cockpit and infotainment system and Harmon Kardon sound system pushing 480W through eight speakers.

Although the GTI comes standard with an extensive list of luxury and safety features, many optional features like Discover Pro Radio (Satellite Navigation, USB, Wireless App-Connect and Voice Control), Park Assist, Rear Traffic Alert and Lane Assist including Electronically Folding Mirrors) and be ordered with the car.

Pricing: Retail price (VAT and emissions tax included) Golf GTI 2.0 TSI 180kW DSG R669 300. This includes a 3-year/120 000km warranty, 5 year/90 000km EasyDrive Service Plan.

Service intervals are 15 000km.
