Oil-burning, M-fettled M40d joins BMW X3 and X4 ranges
With the petrol fuelled M40i derivative of the X3 and X4 already available and the more focused Competition versions due out in the third quarter of this, BMW has now supplemented the line-ups of both with the oil-burning M40d.
Serving as the new M-fettled, entry-point versions in the respective ranges, the M40d comes with the same exterior additions as the M40i, but swaps the 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six petrol engine for a turbodiesel of the same displacement, which has been tuned to produce 240 kW and 680 N.m of torque.
Down 16 kW but up 180 N.m on the M40i, the unit is paired to an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system sending the amount of grunt to all four wheels. In the case of both models, top speed is limited to 250 km/h with the 0-100 km/h for both taking 4.9 seconds with a claimed consumption figure of 6.8 L/100 km.
Sans options, pricing starts at R1Â 027Â 500 for the X3 M40d, the same as the M40i, with the X4 M40d retailing from R1Â 132Â 800, similar to the price tag of the M40i.
