Sign language tutors needed for Rand Aid Association staff
Following the merger of the Max Ordman Deaf Association with Rand Aid Association, sign language tutors are sought to help ensure the Max Ordman residents who will be relocating to Rand Aid’s Thembalami Care Centre, are able to be effectively communicated with.
The Max Ordman Deaf Association was first established in 1926 as a welfare organisation for the deaf. Currently, it operates the Colonel Rowland Home for the Deaf and Deafblind, which was established in Bedfordview in 1944 and provides residential and nursing care for the deaf and deaf blind elderly community.
Rand Aid, a registered non-profit organisation established in 1903, will build a wing to house 30 deaf and deafblind elderly at its Thembalami Care Centre based in Lombardy East. It is expected that the new home, to be known as The Max Ordman Home for the Deaf and Deafblind, will be ready for occupation in 2016.
It is hoped that a volunteer from the community will step forward to teach sign language to around 20 Thembalami care workers. If you are able to assist in any way, please call Ayanda Matthews at 011 882 2510.
