A night of African rhythms and beats
African rhythms, thumping beats and scintillating dances will be the order of the night at the Afro-Grooves music concert on Friday, March 27, at Emperors Palace.
Headlined by Kanda Bongo Man from the Democratic Republic of Congo, it’s sure to dazzle local music lovers.
Afro-pop crooner Ntando will fly the South African flag, while Zozo from Zimbabwe completes the line up.
The legend Kanda Bongo Man is one of the finest exports from DRC, popularly known as “the land of a thousand dances”.
He rose to prominence in his country as a singer for Orchestra Belle Mambo in 1973. He reached international fame when he moved to Paris in 1979 and his music was released in Europe and America.
Kanda is credited as an exponent of Kwassa Kwassa, the infectious dance where a reveller gyrates while the hands move to follow the hip.
He is also respected for his influence in Soukous from Congo. The showman with a wide brimmed hat has been decorated with titles like “legend” and “king”.
His trademark gently rousing high tenor vocals, seamlessly alternate between Lingala and French as he belts out his signature tunes such as Liza and Zing Zong .
Attending a Kanda Bongo Man concert is like being transfixed in a high energy musical wonder, something local audiences will lap it up.
Ntando is a SAMA-winning musician. He cemented his place as a romantic crooner with singalong hits like Ndiyamthanda and Nguwe becoming South African anthems.
The prince of Afro pop has a piercing voice which can scale the highest of pitches and is a marvel to see perform live.
Although living in South Africa, Zozo was born in Zimbabwe. He is hailed as the Michael Jackson of rumba in Limpopo.
His intoxicating brand of music is packed with dance beats and groovy tunes.
